The Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) returned with their signature brand of blues-rock fusion to the historic Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. for a three-night residency from March 5th to 7th, 2024. Dubbed the “Deuces Wild” tour, these intimate shows showcased the band’s musical prowess and deep repertoire, delighting sold-out crowds in the opulent surroundings of the nearly century-old theater.
The Warner Theater, a D.C. landmark since 1922, has hosted a wide range of performers, from Frank Sinatra to Prince and The Rolling Stones. TTB’s return residency adds to the venue’s rich history. The band itself is a powerhouse, featuring the formidable husband-and-wife duo of Susan Tedeschi (vocals, guitar) and Derek Trucks (guitar). Their soulful vocals and electrifying guitar work are complemented by a ten-piece ensemble boasting a searing horn section, a driving rhythm section, and additional vocalists.
Over the three nights, TTB delivered a staggering 55 songs across five sets, remarkably with zero repeats. This commitment to musical diversity showcased the band’s vast repertoire, encompassing originals, covers, and extended jams. The setlists included TTB staples like “Stand Back” (The Allman Brothers Band) and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” (Bob Dylan), alongside unexpected gems like “Wah-Wah” (George Harrison) and “Leave Trunk” (Sleepy John Estes).
Tuesday’s opening night set the tone with a soulful rendition of “The Letter” (The Box Tops) and a blistering take on “Bound for Glory.” Wednesday saw the band delve into classic rock territory with “Bell Bottom Blues” (Derek and the Dominos) and “Mr. Charlie” (Grateful Dead).
Thursday’s performance featured a special treat for fans: The Duane Betts Duo, featuring the son of the legendary Allman Brothers Band guitarist, Dickey Betts. The duo which was a trio on Thursday night consisted of Duane Betts and Johnny Stachela, with Greenwell sitting in on the snare drum opened the show. Betts even joined TTB for a powerful rendition of “Blue Sky” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” by The Allman Brothers Band.
The fun wasn’t confined to the Warner Theater stage. Thursday night saw an afterparty continue at The Hamilton Live, featuring Grahame Lesh and Friends and The Mother Hips. Duane Betts even joined in for the encore of “Cold Rain and Snow”.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s residency at the Warner Theater was a masterclass in musicianship and artistic exploration.
