Check out this video of Panic down South, beckoning forth some tried and true Band favorites in Jackson, Mississippi. The Band’s embrace of the southern mystique was a defining characteristic of their musical genius, due in no small part to the influence of Arkansan Levon Helm. In neighboring Mississippi back in April, one of the South’s premier acts carried on Levon’s work, spinning a growly Dixieland/ragtime infused “Ophelia.”
Panic then segued into “The Shape I’m In,” one of Richard Manuel’s many vocal tours de force and revived by John Hermann, the pride of Oxford, Mississippi himself. For all who got to enjoy Widespread’s final spring tour (for now?), the swing through the Magnolia state was no doubt a simply unforgettable experience.
