The Gumptown is about to get extra funky over Thanksgiving this year at the Union Station Trainshed downtown. Montgomery, AL is about to see one of the most memorable concert experiences in the city’s history come to fruition. Robert Randolph is likely the most prolific sacred steel musician alive and that status has earned him on Rolling Stone‘s shortlist of top 100 guitarists. He will be joined by the Family Band Thursday night along with two great rising talents; BYOGMcLovins.

Luckily I’ve seen all three artists recently in DC. Robert Randolph with the Word at 9:30 Club, the BYOG at Gypsy Sally’s, and a few months later the McLovins at Gypsy Sally’s as well. All I can say is that having grown up in Montgomery, there were a few good shows in town, but nothing on scale and consistency of what Live & Listen has been doing. All three of these bands deliver the heat live. BYOG offers the flavorings of Charleston’s beach vibes with influences of the Grateful Dead. The McLovins are at one of the most pivotal points in their career, their newest self-titled release is by far their most mature album to date and was even picked up by US Magazine for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s weekly playlist. And Robert Randolph is just one of those musicians you must see live, he is a musician’s musician in all facets.

Jordan and Jacob Kirkland at Live & Listen are changing the way promoters, agents, and managers look at the state of Alabama when routing their tours now. This is something huge that the community should whole heartedly support. Tickets are still available for purchase here.

See you all back in the 334 and in the meantime tell us why you’d like a pair of FREE TICKETS to Funksgiving.

Inspired by an eclectic mix of influences like The Meters, The Band and The Flaming Lips, members Jason Ott, Jake Huffman, Justin Berger, and Atticus Kelly combine their songwriting skills with extended improvisations and instrumental ingenuity.

Taking a page from their jam band forefathers, McLovins always try to keep their audiences guessing at what’s to come. Their eclectic setlists and individual musical personas define the band’s live shows. Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, McLovins have appeared at Gathering of The Vibes, Mountain Jam, The Peach Festival and the legendary Nateva Music Festival, as well as many acclaimed venues across the country. They have also performed with some of the most influential artists on the scene, including Buddy Guy, George Porter, Jr. and Oteil Burbridge.

Recently the band cut an album with Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award winning producer Bill Sherman in New York City’s East Village.  The album was released this October and the band is currently on tour. The band continues to evolve, bringing their distinctive, jam-rock productions across the country. Every tour brings a unique energy. (Read More)
