Southern Belles have become a strong regional force on the scene for their ballad-esque songs that collide with the worlds of jam and indie rock. Basically a progressive rock outfit combining elements from various genres presented in a live rock n roll concert format. Coming off their “Close to Sunrise” release in July 2015 the band carried their summer time momentum into the fall by winning the Battle of the Bands to secure a slot at the epic mammoth festival that is Lockn’ in Arrington,VA.
We take great pleasure and effort in the songwriting process. In that process we always intend to leave room for the song to develop and leave space for us to be able to improvise as a group and individually. There are so many aspects to what we do. When we are in the studio we are all about efficiency and try to never leave excessive content that is better portrayed live. Live music is theater, entertainment and now and days a band in our circuit has to be able to provide a well-executed, high-energy performance…… Show something human, try to achieve something super human. Play something familiar, surprise them.
– Adrian Ciucci (Southern Belles)
I’ve been following this band since their very early days and it is safe to say the latest album is by far the best album they’ve ever put out for several reasons. The improvisational element of their music has been honed for years and continues to get better, naturally, as time progresses. Their new self-titled album is part of a new chapter in the band’s life. Everyone has now graduated college and is ready to get this train rolling full speed ahead. The song-writing and arrangements are what makes this record grab your attention. The matured sound is there and this may be the beginning of “that” sound they’ve been chasing all along. I’m not the only one sharing this sentiment. Six days ago Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda put them on his recommended playlist for USMagazine. If you love jambands, but want a well-rounded group that respects the art of the song, McLovins is a must-see.
