The Trongone Band & The Congress
Cover The Dead’s “Sugaree” at the Broadberry in Richmond, VA
The Trongone Band is a rock n roll outfit that lends itself to the sounds of classic rock, southern rock, and the improvisational spirit of a jamband. There is a lot of attention to the song itself, the story telling component. A great way to familiarize yourself with this band is from this recent recording of the final three songs of their set at the Broadberry in Richmond,VA. The venue is their hometown stomping grounds and a few weeks ago they were joined by none other than The Congress.
“Ain’t it Funny” features a nice slow guitar solo lead-in introduction before the band tells us tales of life, women, and the like. “Ain’t it funny how nothing lasts, she just left and never came back,” sings Andrew Trongone. The song’s lyrical parts are treated with equal importance as their instrumental passages. There is no aimless noodling here. While they don’t really sound like the Allman Brother persay, they do share a certain philosophical approach in how they disseminate their song-based gifts alongside their aptitude for instrumental sections.
“The Reason” carries a traditional southern rock structure complete with well placed slide guitar licks throughout the verses. The song features Jonathan Meadows & Scott Lane from The Congress. The Congress has opened for such highly esteemed acts including Tedeschi Trucks Band, Lake Street Dive, and Hard Working Americans. Put their members on stage with the Trongone Band and the result is kind of like Tedeschi Trucks Band meets the Black Crowes meets JJ Grey & Mofro.
The final song of the night was a well selected cover. In theory everyone can cover the Grateful Dead, but pulling it off with perfection and your own unique flavor without butchering the integrity of the song is another matter. Luckily the Trongone Band is pretty well acquainted with the Dead catalog. The “Sugaree” is a strong listen from start to finish and I definitely recommend it for any of you heads out there.
The Trongone Band will be performing a show this Friday at the Bungalow in Chantilly, VA brought to you by Heady Entertainment. For additional tour dates click here.
