Earphunk

Official April Tour Preview

New Orlean’s Fastest Growing Prog-Funk Outfit

In Fall of 2009 my Phil friend from New Orleans introduced me to the music some of his friends from the Crescent City had sent him. Earphunk sent us some SBD’s of their early shows and we were completely blown away by songs like “Chanky”and “Tryna Make It Funky”. It was fairly obvious from the beginning that Earphunk carried the signature cajun flavor of the world renowned Nola funk sound. Moreover, this was a reassurance that the New Orleans funk torch was being passed along to my generation with the bearers of that flame being none other than Earphunk.

The key to their success lies not only in their natural talent, but also the band members’ and Alex Bowen’s tenacity. They are among the hardest working rising talents on the live music scene. Playing night to night across the country while building a fan base can easily be perceived as an all glamour and no grit “rock n roll” lifestyle to those on the outside, but to a band it is much more than that. The lengthy drives across multiple state lines after loading out at 3:00am takes a dedication and passion for art that is often taken for granted. They even wrote a song “No Nine to Five” saying “that ain’t for me”. It should be noted that in order to really prosper in the long term as a touring musician you must be born & ready for the sort of dedication that extends well beyond the typical work hours.

After multiple cross country tours the band recorded, Sweet Nasty,  at Studio in the Country nestled in the rural landscapes of Loiusiana, which receivede heavy airplay on Sirius XM’s Jam On station. The well calculated decision to embrace the digital era was a genius move on the part of the band. Their release of Sweet Nasty as a Bittorrent Bundle received 580,000 downloads shortly following the album release in August. A natural fit to take Earphunk to the next destination in their career came shortly thereafter when Matt Runner of Paradiagm Agency who, like the band, is well known for his tenacity and work ethic, took over the reigns of booking the band.

Since then Earphunk has become even more of a dominant force on the live music scene. With guitar solos from the heavens and a tone I wish I could steal is Paul Provosty. Mark Hempe’s funky licks join Paul in unison to drive the constant wave of funk grooves while lending some strong vocal talents. Christian Galle’s guitar skills served as the foundation of music theory as Galle transitioned to the Hammond B-3 role in the early days of Earphunk, since then his clav & B-3 work is a crucial facet of the band dynamic. Michael Matthews and Michael Comeaux are the driving force for the roller coaster of high energy upbeat grooves of Earphunk with a chemistry that grows even stronger each and every gig. Earphunk isn’t about one person, rather it is about the essence of what makes Nola funk so special – the ability to combine feel-based playing that speaks to people through each members’ understanding of a band dynamic. Instead of fighting for the spotlight everyone knows exactly when and where to contribute in any given song both in the studio and live in concert.

Earphunk is just getting started and they’re only going to continue shattering our expectations with the new album they’re currently recording. Complacency is for the weak-minded and Earphunk wants nothing to do with that.  In the end, the band wants to bring fans the best music they can possibly make and they’ve made hard work a defining point of their band philosophy, which combined with their exceptional musical abilities, allows them to serve as one of the quintessential rising acts in the country.
