Recap by Zach Bloom

Cleveland’s Jamtronic fans experienced a rare treat Thursday night when powerhouse touring outfit Lotus played to an intimate sold out crowd at the Beachland Ballroom. The 450 capacity Ballroom was packed to the walls as fans were treated two hour-long sets that delivered upbeat dance music right up until curfew. Beyond the lucky ones who made it inside, fans across the country were given the opportunity to share the experience online with an audio stream provided by the band’s top-rate production crew on the new concert streaming platform, Phoncert.

The first set featured an extended jam in “Sift” that led the band through two key changes and a segue to the crowd favorite “Jump Off” that ended the set with a blissful 20 minute dance party. Although the room could barely fit the crowd and all the energy that emanated between them and the band, the friendly Lotus fans made it work, dancing brim-to-brim as the band delivered one jam after another. Our photographer, Michael appeared from the pit at set break like a soldier dragged in from the field grinning ear to ear that despite the chaos, he got the “money shots.”

The second set was even better as the band demonstrated their ability to get technical. The set featured a jam in “Plant” leading into “Bush Pilot”, which was convincing enough to anyone thinking about leaving early that they were’t going anywhere yet. The set was capped with a juggernaut of “Slow Cookin” > “Sid” > “Intro to a Cell” that brought the house down in a climax of lights and energy. The cherry on top was an encore of the funk classic “Shining Star” to let the dance-fiends shake out those last moments of bliss before venturing back into the cold, snowy doldrums of the polar Cleveland winter.

  1. Great review. Was not a rare performance my any means. They usually come once a year to the Beachland and also play Nelson Ledges in the summer. Great pics.
