Phish – 6/16/12 “Light” from Phish on Vimeo.

June 15, 16, and 17  over 20,000 Phish fans flocked to Atlantic City’s municipal airport, Bader Field, nestled nicely along the intercoastal waterway with 142 acres of space. Live Music Daily was only there for the Saturday night show. Here is a brief recap of the show.

Set one the band came out guns-a-blazin’ with a scorching Mike’s Song> I am Hydrogen> Weekapaug Groove opener. The band slowed things down with a standard yet well played rendition of “Gumbo”. Picking the momentum back up Mike began the opening vocals to “Halley’s Comet” before segueing into fan-favorite “My Friend, My Friend”. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the first set was an unexpected “Punch You in the Eye”.

Trey Anastasio aborted “The Horse” following “Wolfman’s Brother” claiming that he messed up because he was too busy thinking about how stupid the ending is to “My Friend, My Friend”. Fishman tells Trey it is his favorite ending of a song, Trey repeats this making it “official”, and the crowd goes wild. Trey asks Page what his favorite song is, Page picks up the mic and busts into his vocal serenade of “Lawn Boy”.

The second set began very strong with Crosseyed and Painless into Slave to the Traffic Light. The band was smoothly segueing songs nearly the entire second set teasing “Crosseyed and Painless” quotes during “Light” and “Sand”. Second set highlights included a well played “Theme From the Bottom” and a standard yet energized set closer “Run Like An Antelope”.

Phish finished off Night Two of the run with a spot-on cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times, Bad Times” with extended jamming centered around Trey Anastasio.

Overall the vibe at Bader Field was great. Phish runs are always unique, but put Atlantic City together with Phish along the intercoastal waterway and you get something very special.

Phish has come out very strong early on in the tour. The group is arguably playing at its finest since coming back together in March of 2009 at Hampton Coliseum.
