Kevin Scott is a highly sought after bassist and producer from Atlanta, GA who is well known for his ability to excel in all genres ranging from jazz to metal. He will be performing tonight (May 10) in DC with The New Stew (Tickets & Event Info).
You’ve been on the ATL scene for a long time, can you tell us about the scene there and what you enjoy most about it?
Atlanta has an amazing diverse and innovative scene. The musicians have a strong loving community and we all look out for one another. I really enjoy how most musicians in Atlanta I work with have an aggressive take no prisoners vibe on the bandstand. The more you push boundaries on stage the better!
You and Matt have even started working on a new project, King Baby, could you tell us about how that is coming along?
It’s coming along great. We have been recording for the past few months and we should have an EP out soon on Abstract Logix. We are all very excited about this music out to the world.
Do you recall the first time you heard this album and what does it mean to you?
Duane Trucks introduced that record to me years ago on the road. It blew my mind! How had I somehow over looked this album for so long?! Between the grooves, the amazing songs, and Bills stories it captures one of the most honest live albums ever.
What’s the key to playing Melvin Dunlap’s bass grooves on this album, it is all about feel right?
Melvin is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. His feel and rock solid time drive the whole record. He doesn’t move..ever! You won’t find busy nervous bass playing on this record at all. Since I had heard and studied the album so much before I got called for the gig, I put time into finding ways to get my personality in the grooves but always tying keep Melvin’s amazing feel strong throughout the set. That groove Melvin does on “world keeps going around” gets me every time.
How have the shows been going so far this tour and what have been some of your personal favorite highlights?
The shows have been fantastic! The Philly show has been the highlight so far. Corey Glover brought the crowd to tears! It was an amazing moment for sure.
