Thievery Corporation came in ready guns a blazin’ on Friday night at the 9:30 Club. Thursday night’s show (read our review here) was on point, but last night the band was clearly more in their element, settling in for the weekend. The world rhythms of “Facing East” set the tone for the night. Rob Myers sat on his couch indian style with his sitar, Ashish locked into the pocket, Sanchez and Frank Orrall filled out the percussive spaces.

It was Thursday night that Rob Myers (Guitar/Sitar)was on stage after the set taking photos of the audience, and upstairs taking photos of fans post-show. Shortly thereafter, Myers had to go to the ER to pass a kidney stone. Despite the pain, which had Myers playing guitar from a seat, you couldn’t tell much of a difference. That’s rock n roll ladies and gentlemen. When you’re expected to play a three night sold out run at the 9:30 Club, you show up and play.
Staples from the catalog emerged all night, “Take My Soul” with Lou Lou, “Overstand” with Ras Puma, “Radio Retaliation” with Sleepy Wonder, “Culture of Fear” with Mr. Life, and “Liberation Front” with Rootz and Zeebo. Natalia’s “Depth of My Soul” sounded even better than the previous night, in my opinion. The entire group of Thieves led by Garza and Hilton were feeling the Friday energy in DC. Puma shined on the “Blasting Thru” off Radio Retlation, “War keeps blasting through the city tonight, Love assassinated in broad daylight, The righteous are hiding in the graveyard grass, While the wicked sell their sons and daughters for cash”.
Lou Lou’s “La Femme Parallel” was also a notable number off Radio Retaliation.The clear highlight personally was “Assault on Babylon” off Thievery Corporations 1997 debut album, “Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi”.
The band returned to the stage for some favorite from Thievery’s dense discography; “Sweet Tides,” “Lebanese Blonde,” and “The Richest Man in Babylon.”
Round three tonight. If the past two nights are any indication of how tonight will go it is safe to say this will be a special one to close out both a 3 night run at the 9:30 Club as well as close out this tour.
