Keith Richards is a beast and we aren’t quite sure how he’s still doing it. Even as one of my favorite guitarists in one of the best bands in the history of music, I find it hard to completely agree with some of the statements made against Metallica & Black Sabbath in a recent NY Daily News Interview. While I enjoy the Rolling Stones much more than the two aforementioned talents that is not to say that they’re “jokes”. Keith respectfully differs on the matter…
“Millions are in love with Metallica and Black Sabbath,” Richards says. “I just thought they were great jokes.” – Keith Richards
The golden era of hip-hop holds a special place in my heart. Big L, Notorious B.I.G., Run DMC, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, the list goes on and on. Keith doesn’t feel the same way. I can relate to mainstream hip-hop not being my cup of tea and the lack of instrumental value, but the underground is still alive if you look around for good music. Just as the same with rock. Mainstream rock isn’t that good, but that doesn’t mean good Rock N Roll doesn’t exist. I could go on to make a more lengthy argument with more compelling examples, but you get the picture here.
“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” – Keith Richards
Either way, Keith and do and say whatever he wants to. He’s been doing that for god knows how long and it has worked rather well for him. Read the entire interview here.
