U Street Music Hall and Fort Knox Recordings present: SEE-I & Black Alley
See-I

For their second album, See-I, Washington, DC’s most prodigious live band, have built on the sound and success of their debut record to createa work that comes straight from the heart. As leaders of the Reggae-Soul Movement, they continue to expand their scope infusing the new album,“Knowledge Shine Bright” with elements of Funk, House, Dancehall, Hip-Hop, R&B and Rock. The record is marked by dazzling guest appearances by rappers Mr Lif & Flex Mathews and chanteuses Candice Mills & Edy Blu who bring muscle and soul to this collection of 12 songs. Intimate yet expansive, “Knowledge Shine Bright” is a 50 minute sonic journey that few contemporary bands have the fortitude to conjure.
Founded by brothers Arthur “Rootz” Steele and Archie “Zeebo” Steele, who have toured and performed for over 15 years as frontmen for the Thievery Corporation live band. See-I is comprised of Rob Myers on guitar, Ashish
Vyas on bass, Jeff Franca on drums, Frank Mitchell on saxophone and Salem Steele on keyboards, all of whom live within the 10 x 10 mile square known as Babylon, er… the Nation’s Capital. From humble beginnings in North Carolina, the Steele Brothers got their start singing in the church choir and were soon transfixed by the funk, soul and rock sounds they heard on the radio in the 1970s. Decades of musical depth and experience are the secret weapons they bring to the table, both live and in the studio.
“Knowledge Shine Bright” opens with “Never Give Up,” a deeply-moving Reggae tune, written while on tour by Rootz and Zeebo memorializing their mother who passed at the time. Although a Reggae groove infuses all of the album there are many notable musical departures. “The Chase” finds Rootz singing over a House beat fused to Afropop guitars, “Rudeboy Razor” melds Rock and Hip Hop, “Musical Murder” slithers from Dancehall to World Beat, ending in a sitar-drenched outro courtesy of Rob Myers (Thievery Corporation’s “Lebanese Blonde”), “Queen of Sheba” and “Revolution” find the band getting in touch with their feminine side with vocalists Edy Blu and Candice Mills burying their sexy and profound lyrics deep into the groove, and on “The Boogieman” the inimitable Mr Lif finds his flow to be the perfect match for the track’s quirky, P-Funk pseudo-political jibber-jabber. And the title track? Well, you’ll just have to hear for yourself how a contemporary band can bring so much old school wisdom and soul to light.
Black Alley

BLACK ALLEY has been pushing the art of music to its rhythmic limits for some time now. Determined to create a unique musical elixir, BLACK ALLEY has taken the finest ingredients of funk, jazz, soul, and rock to create a sound and genre all their own; they call it “Hood Rock”. The band is one, each musician surrendering to the union of sounds, each delivering music from their soul, while they are in dialogue with one another through their instruments. Each member of this collective is essential to the workability and funkability of the unit which is BLACK ALLEY.
BLACK ALLEY has become one of the most followed, trendsetting and sought-after music groups hailing from the nation’s capital. With endorsements from national recording artists such as Grammy Award nominee Raheem DeVaughn, Hip Hop standouts Big KRIT & Wale, and the legendary Sheila E, Black Alley is untouchable, striving to rock harder and heavier each time they unite and contribute to the greater good of music.
BLACK ALLEY has been featured on various media outlets to include Okayplayer, EarMilk, ThatsEnuff.com, Washington City Paper, and Washington Post. BLACK ALLEY’s music catalog contains two critically acclaimed independent releases. In 2012, the band released “Soul. Swagger. Rock. Sneakers”. The 16-track compilation features original music from Black Alley in collaboration with Raheem DeVaughn, Nicholas Ryan Gant and Phil Ade. Their follow up album, “Black Alley: Live from the RNR Hotel” is the live recording project chronicling their powerful performance at their SOLD OUT album release event. Both albums are available on iTunes and BlackAlley.Bandcamp.com. The video for their single “Artist Prayer” is in heavy rotation on VH1 Soul and the video for their single “Bad Girl” recently debuted exclusively on MTVHive.com.
BLACK ALLEY has been honored to share the stage with renowned artists like Common, Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kaiyote, Talib Kweli, MC Lyte, Doug E Fresh, Gin Blossoms, Marsha Ambrosius, Mack Wilds, Raheem DeVaughn, Wale, Bilal, Busta Rhymes, Scarface, and Chrisette Michele just to name a few.

Tropicalia and Multiflora Productions present:
Batala Washington

Batala in Washington, D.C. is part of a larger Batala family created in 1997 by Giba Gonçalves. Born and raised in Salvador, Bahia in Brazil, Giba was living in Paris when he first had the idea for the band. Open to anyone with an interest in learning the samba-reggae beat, the band started off with 60 people.
From Paris it spread to other cities in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. In 2003, the band finally made its way back to its origins, brought to Brazil by Paulo Garcia, also the founder of the Portsmouth Batala. Composer and musical director, Giba enlisted the help of friends from the bands and from Salvador in order to create the visual identity of the band. The instruments and clothings are all manufactured in Salvador, Bahia, where the band has a social program that gives jobs to many families. From there they are shipped to the bands around the world.
In 2007, Batala Washington joined the Mundo Batala Family, expanding the reach of the band’s music to the United States. Today, the band has over 300 percussionists around the world.
Backbeat Underground

Backbeat Underground honors the talent and resiliency of jazz artists of the 60’s, who adapted to a changing audience by adding elements of funk and soul to their sound, giving birth to an entirely new genre of music that’s vital and relevant today From Grant Green to The New Mastersounds and Freddie Hubbard to The Greyboy Allstars, Backbeat Underground lays down a smoldering blend of original jazz funk & soul.

Joe Keyes and The Late Bloomer Band

Joe Keyes is equal parts front man, poet and band conductor. The Freehold, NJ, native found his orchestra in late 2009 in The Late Bloomer Band, a rotating cast of Baltimore/DC-based musicians. The band takes audiences back to the days of Miles Davis and early P-Funk, when big bands were lead by strong forces of individuals. The band’s brand of live improvisation and musical sophistication presents a different experience at every show.
While Keyes draws inspiration from musical mentors Gil Scott-Heron and Sun Ra, The Late Bloomer Band brings a modern interpretation to funk, jazz, rock and a variety of other genres.
The Late Bloomer Band’s members, in their mid-20s, help keep 52-year-old Keyes young, and come from various Baltimore and D.C.-based bands. Having grown together musically, the band’s polished tightness has landed collaborations and live shows featuring original Fishbone members Angelo “Dr. Madd Vibe” Moore and Norwood Fisher.
Janka Nabay & The Bubu Gang

Janka Nabay is the undisputed king of bubu, a frantically-paced dance music with ancient, magical origins in Sierra Leone. The Bubu Gang are the posse of musical collaborators he has hooked up with in the US (featuring members of Skeletons and Gang Gang Dance among others), to create a wild, high-octane juggernaut of call-and-response vocal interplay, juddering dancefloor rhythms, synths and guitars: throw in a taste for tearaway improvisation and you have an absolute blast of a sound, that keeps it quick, loose and natural and runs on pure musical joy. Ready to hit hard and true in full band format at festivals worldwide in 2012. An EP drops on True Panther Sounds in March before a full-length album on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label later in the year.
Janka single-handedly radicalised bubu in his native Freetown, Sierra Leone in the nineties, adding drum machine kicks and twitching synths to its airy hum of blown bamboo shoots and carburetor pipes. Then he relocated to Philadelphia, and after a decade off the musical radar he found a Stateside vessel for his infectious music in True Panther Sounds, who released a well-received EP in 2010. This caught the well-tuned ears of the mostly Brooklyn-based players who would go on to make up the Bubu Gang, namely Doug Shaw (Gang Gang Dance, Highlife, White Magic), Jason McMahon & Jonathan Leland (Skeletons), Michael Gallope (Starring) and vocalist Boshra Al-Saadi (Saadi): a series of sweatbox US shows followed, and all involved realized they had birthed something beyond the sum of its parts: “We speak one language now”, says Janka of these exciting new sounds, that draw as much from Janka’s own bubu as they do from the sunny energy of Ghanaian highlife, the extended improvisations of 70s Miles Davis, the hypnotic rhythms of classic Afro-beat and the swirling echoes of 60s and 70s psychedelia.

DCDIT and Union Kitchen presents The Lot Finale!
Congo Sanchez, Crocodiles, & Baby Bry Bry and the Apologists
Congo Sanchez

The evolution of this ensemble has happened naturally over the past year and a half. Having already captivated audiences from coast to coast, and now with the completion their first full length record, ‘Dealin With This’, it is clear that Congo, Haile and Flex are on the rise as a cutting edge musical force.

Congo’s time as the drummer for Thievery Corporation has clearly had an effect on his ear as he continues to explore the down-tempo, reggae mezcla, with an obvious hip-hop overtone to the composition. Listeners of ‘Dealin With This’ will hear an array of sounds and rhythms, paying homage to the roots of music with thick layers of percussion; signature to the Congo Sanchez sound. All of this accompanied by a conscious message and an authentic lyrical approach creates a superb listening experience.

Ben’s Next Door presents:
Three Man Soul Machine & Astronaut Jones
Three Man Soul Machine
Blending the music of Soul, Jazz, Blues and Reggae, Three Man Soul Machine puts together a musical gumbo that stretches from Africa to the Caribbean and lands home in the USA. Hopefully, in one of these provinces of musical bliss, you, the listener, can find a home.
Three Man Soul Machine features Carter Stevens on Organ, Mylie Durham IV on Drums and Frank Mitchell Jr. on Tenor Saxophone. While Carter Stevens is a relative newcomer to the DC music scene, Mylie and Frank have played with bands including The Funk Ark, The Harry Bells, See-I, and Thievery Corporation over the last ten years.
These three musicians enjoy a variety of music and grooves and strive to blend these interests into their own version of the 21K organ trio.
If you love Bob Marley, Stanely Turrentine, Tommy McCook and James Brown, you’ll dig Three Man Soul Machine.
Astronaut Jones

Astronaut Jones began in Summer 2013 as a collaboration between Max Kuzmyak and Satya Thallam. Having played together in various funk, jam, rock and jazz groups in the DC area for years, they had been tossing around the idea of a new project building on electronic pioneers Bonobo, Zero 7, and local faves Thievery Corporation. This new project would need to exploit their love of classic R&B and groove bands and mix it with modern electronic environments. Above all else, it would emphasize live performance and exploit the founders’ facility with various instruments.
Electronic foundations meet real life musicality.
Astronaut Jones productions and live performances consist of a spontaneous ordering of saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn, Rhodes, synths, samples, guitar, electric bass, vocals, and percussion all layered over programmed grooves and effects.
Check out the LiveMusicDaily review of their album, Game Theory (Here).

Matthew Gillich In Thought Collection

Entering stage left for your entertainment pleasure and soulful exposure… Matthew Gillich In Thought Collection!
Matthew Gillich has been blowing the horn since one fate-filled, carpet square-sitting day in the fourth grade. He soon became enamored with the sounds of Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, and Dizzy Gillespie which led to an obsession with the jazz paradigm. Playing both jazz and classical throughout his formative schooling years, he earned a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Matthew now teaches at a public charter school in Washington, D.C. Seeking knowledge, Matthew traveled to Accra, Ghana to study West African drumming and the oral tradition and has studied with luminaries such as John McNeil, Noah Preminger, James Moore, Mike Cemprola, Dwayne Dolphin, and Melody Meadows. In Thought Collection was started as a think tank workshop in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, but has become a regularly performing group in the region. A unique blend of freedom, liberation, straight ahead, tradition, and a splash of funk and hip hop, In Thought Collection is definitely a group to check out.

Black Space is public art installation created by Holly Bass. A tiny house in the shape of the “Diamond District”—three smooth sides and one jagged side, Black Space replicates the map view of DC. The District has been a center of black culture since the early 1900s and boasted a majority black population from 1960-2010. Black Space sits at the juncture of DC history and the future of DC. We believe that regardless of ethnicity or background, as DC residents and tourists we all occupy black space.
“Women in Color” began as a collaborative piece to be performed at the opening of Rose Jaffe’s solo exhibition also entitled “Women in Color.” Using live instrumental accompaniment and an improvisation based score for movement, Ra Nubia explores the art of “Now” also known as the present moment by transforming the performance space into a responsive and interactive environment for not only the dancers and musicians, but the audience as well. Women in Color is a work in progress created by Ra Nubi.
