Cover Dead Classics: “Truckin” & “Althea”

Weir,_Bob_(2007)_2

Sure, I’m not a fan of John Mayer’s “Body is a Wonderland” or any of his hit songs. However, many of guitarists out there know that John Mayer Trio highlights his ability to rip the blues guitar packed with a punch of soul. When he’s given the right setting, such as at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, Mayer proves himself to be a legitimate guitarist with clear influences from the classic rock gods of the past.

Last night John Mayer and Bob Weir rocked through two classic dead numbers on CBS. “Truckin'” is done with some slight of hand chillful blues stylings from Mayer. In no way is he looking replicate Jerry here, he takes the song to a simple relaxed blues place. “Althea” is definitely the clear choice between the two songs performed last night. Mayer and Bobby lock-in there for an abbreviated, yet gentle passage of improvisation at the end.
