Flashback Friday
A happy, happy belated birthday to The Clash’s Mick Jones, who turned 59 yesterday. Mick is responsible for co-writing a large portion of The Clash’s repertoire, alongside frontman Joe Strummer. Today’s Flashback Friday is off the group’s classic 1979 post-punk album London Calling. The album failed to make it to American charts the year of its release, but has since then gone Platinum in the States—an obvious testament to The Clash’s grasp of a sound before its time. The track starts with an angular guitar riff reminiscent of the group’s punk roots, but it quickly transitions into short, melodic, repetitive verses and choruses that swing. It’s a pretty little ditty that’s over before you know it, leaving you wanting for more. Put it in on repeat as you head into the weekend.
