Female fronted funk band, Kim Jade Fry on bass and vocals…bringing the real funk from the real funk town….

Funk is a feeling, a groove, and a vibration. Funk is a state of mind. And Chocolate City, as DC is affectionately known, is home to some of the world’s thickest funk vibes. The Good Thing is a funk band from the Nation’s Capital; soul, rock and blues can also be heard in their unique sound. The Good Thing came to get down!

Kim Jade, lays down some hard-core bass grooves and sings with a whole lotta soul, and she is not afraid to challenge the audience and keep them on their toes. Dancing and grooving are in order as the band goes from old school blues ‘n’ funk to classic soul, only to surprise you with some rock grooves thrown in for good measure.

The Good Thing have been kickin some ass in DC for a few years now. Kim Jade and The Good Thing have been playing regularly at the, always packed and ready to funk, Madams Organ, right in the center of DC’s Adam’s Morgan district, since 2009. They have played the Kennedy Center, The Hamilton, Tropicalia, Artisphere, Rock and Roll Hotel, and beyond…Sharing the bill with artists such as: Bonerama, The Main Squeeze, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band and The Stooges Brass band from New Orleans. The band consists of some real DC legends, real funk musicians with a raw, down and dirty ,funky and free…style. This is a very diverse band that represents what DC is all about!

Bandleader Kim Jade Fry, originally from New York, and “The Good Thing”, formed in DC, both rely heavily on the chops of a DC legend, guitarist Charles Wright. An alumnus of the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, Charles Wrights’ DC roots are deep and he can often be heard leading the Charles Wright Trio or Stone/Wright. One of DC’s best pocket drummers, Paul Dudley, is another major part of the band. Paul’s vast experience ranging from soul, jazz, gospel and hip-hop drumming is called upon as the band pushes the limits of funk. The trio of Kim, Paul and Charles forms the backbone of the band and the three to four piece horn section is filled out with some of DC’s hottest horn players who each bring something special to the group. Brian Cunningham on sax, Ben Jackon on bone, and the top trumpet player in DC, Joseph Brotherton on the Trumpet. And special guests on Saxes, Walter Tates or Daniel Wallace, when the stage is big enough to handle us!!

Since the explosion of funk music in the 1970’s, DC has been a city dedicated to giving up the funk!! The Good Thing seeks to continue that tradition and blends together all the composite elements, while bringing some fresh new perspectives to the mix. While the band is made up of serious musicians, the music is meant to be fun and that’s rule number one. So let’s get funky and keep it on the “one”! Get out on the dance floor, flash a big smile and get up offa that thing!
