When I was 14 years old I caught the funk bug seeing Galactic, Papa Grows Funk, & Parliament Funkadelic in the same year. Catching Papa Grows Funk at B.B. Kings in New York City was an eye opening experience to say the least. They are straight up raw-gritty-dirtysouth-nola funk that couldn’t be more honest & genuine in its approach.
John Gros leads the band on the Hammond B-3 Organ. June Yamagishi lends heavy blues rock wah-infused guitar licks, while Marc Pero holds down the bottom end with slap bass in yo’ face. Jeffery “Jellybean” Alexander blends classic New Orleans style drumming with a rock edge. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Nola roots band without a sax, which Jason Mingledorff lays down with perfection.
