Kung Fu
“Kung Fu features Tim Palmieri (guitar), Robert Somerville (tenor sax), Todd Stoops (keyboards), Chris DeAngelis (bass guitar), and Adrian Tramontano (drums/percussion). The powerhouse quintet’s live show has been described by critics and fans alike as “lethal funk”, “explosive”, “jaw dropping”, and “musically mesmerizing”. For the uninitiated, the experience is typically shocking yet the focus is simple” (Kungfu: About)

Papa Grows Funk
When I was 14 years old I caught the funk bug seeing Galactic, Papa Grows Funk, & Parliament Funkadelic in the same year. Catching Papa Grows Funk at B.B. Kings in New York City was an eye opening experience to say the least. They are straight up raw-gritty-dirtysouth-nola funk that couldn’t be more honest & genuine in its approach.
John Gros leads the band on the Hammond B-3 Organ. June Yamagishi lends heavy blues rock wah-infused guitar licks, while Marc Pero holds down the bottom end with slap bass in yo’ face. Jeffery “Jellybean” Alexander blends classic New Orleans style drumming with a rock edge. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Nola roots band without a sax, which Jason Mingledorff lays down with perfection.

Cherub & Two Fresh

Just hours ago and Cherub and Two Fresh released this collaborative three track EP titled “Unplanned Parenthood” via thissongissick.com . Be sure to also check out the previous releases from both artists.

Cherub
Cherub is aptly self-described as “A sexy, avante garde, electro-pop duo that is the dance love-child of 80’s funk, and pop-music from the future”. I caught the duo in Dallas,TX at The Prophet Bar while they were touring in support of their highly acclaimed debut album, “MoM & DaD”. Both members have unique stage presence as they exchange catchy guitar riffs and belt out harmonizing vocals that get the crowd moving. On Nov. 30th the group joined HK Management. Big sights lie ahead for these two soon-to-be stars. (Tour Dates)

Two Fresh
In the Spring of 2010 a group of friends strongly urged me to take a seven hour drive to catch the double bill of Big Gigantic & Two Fresh at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, AR. Needless to say I was blown away by both groups and left feeling that the future of the electronic music scene would turn in the direction of artists incorporating instrumental samples and live instruments. Twin brothers Kendrick and Sherwyn Nicholls alongside drummer Colby Buckeler create electronic dance music grounded in a foundation of hip-hop, funk, and soul. They will be touring throughout December including a stop at The Summit in Durango, CO this Friday and a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN before their dates pick back up in late January.
